POUND: Art by Anne Joelle Tan
A solo exhibition of Agitator’s Summer ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE
In Anne-Joelle Tan’s debut solo show “Pound,” recognizable objects and imagery transcend the everyday morphing into loaded iconography. With the use of a range of materials such as oil paint, deer antlers and rust on steel to name a few, these icons are recontextualized. Original meanings are stripped away; the surrounding images and meme sensibilities impregnate the icons with new connotations. Through a deliberate selection of readymade internet screenshots and naturally occurring camera roll gems, digital and personal histories coalesce into ludicrous narratives ripe for a multitude of interpretations. Throughout her work, humor and nonsensicality are punctuated with the occasional unexpected glimpse of earnestness which borders on a voyeuristic kind of intimacy. These compositions are littered with sly references and inside jokes with oneself.
Anne-Joelle Tan is a Chicago based painter and sculptor. She received her B.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2023. Interested in materiality, she works with a wide range of materials. Drawing from her personal histories with the digital, and occasionally from her international background, she aims to document the ephemeral, frivolous and sentimental. Anne-Joelle is similarly enamored by internet bohemia— she runs an irreverent meme page on Instagram which has been featured in multiple media outlets.
